If you hang around here at Raising Munchies for long enough you will soon find out that I have a definite leaning towards alternative health and wellness. I love good whole food with no preservatives or additives. I am an avid supporter of nonGMO, local, organic food, and as a family we spend a fair share on nutritional supplements. I am also a lover of homeopathy and generally chose this method of healing over any other.
If you don’t know what homeopathy is specifically this is a great article to read. I also did not understand what it was, even though I thought I did. I pretty much thought it was just another name for nutrition, naturopathy, or holistic medicine. I just clumped them all together in the same category thinking they all meant the same thing. Well this is my story of discovery…
I have had a love of all things relating to natural health and wellness since my late teens. I loved cruising the health food store, searching through alternative medicine texts, and playing guinea pig on myself with all sorts of supplements and concoctions. Of course I never saw a huge benefit because it was all very misguided and a lot of guessing went into it at that point in my life. There came a time in my mid twenties where all that started to change.
I was blessed with the opportunity to move to Europe in my mid twenties. I was still cruising the health food stores, but now they were new. They had new supplements and remedies, with brands, names, and products I had never seen before. A lot of the labels were in german and french so I had to start asking for help and guidance with my purchases. This became my first encounter with homeopathy, even though I didn’t know it at the time.
I had been struggling more than usual with allergies that first spring that I was in Europe. I always had a problem with seasonal allergies but I took a prescription allergy medication for it. I hadn’t filled my prescription before I left and didn’t want to see a physician abroad unless it was an emergency. So of course I went asking around at the local health food store and the woman there recommended something completely foreign to me that I had never used before. A homeopathic remedy. It worked like a charm. No more allergies. Gone.
I never really knew what she had given me at the time. All I cared about was that it worked. I was always intrigued by that experience and it really stuck with me. It wasn’t a pharmaceutical drug, but it worked, and worked well. It actually worked better because there were no side effects to go along with it. So life went on and soon I was back at home in the States.
Once home I soon got back into my old ways of doing things. I was still cruising the health food stores and my allergies were back again. With no idea of what I was taking in Europe, not even an idea of what category it was in, I started talking with friends. I was hoping to gain some wisdom from personal testimonies on what worked for them. So I found myself hopping around from doctor to doctor, seeing allergists, and was soon on a slew of medications. Some worked a little, some caused more side effects than it was worth. Most troubling was I also started noticing new symptoms of eczema and asthma. My efforts were not propelling me towards better health. I was getter worse.
I was soon accepting things as a way of life. It had been so long since I had been free of illness that this was the new normal. Also contributing to the situation was that I was working for a surgeon and medicine was just how you did things. I had soon forgot there might be another way. I was still cruising the health food stores but had really lost hope in all that I found there. I just went for the basics, vitamins, probiotics, and some organic foods.
I would come across little glimmers of hope every now and then. An example is while working in the plastic surgeons office we would use arnica montana to speed recovery after procedures. I was amazed that these tiny little pills could almost miraculously clear bruising after treatments and surgery. I was more intrigued with the fact that the doctor for whom I was working could not explain this. He had no knowledge of why it worked, what was in there that was making it work, or even what these little pills were. What? He’s the doctor… and he doesn’t know? I was amazed.
So I started looking for answers again, still not knowing about this thing called homeopathy. All I knew is that there had to be something out there… something better. I visited a naturopathic doctor and left with some dietary changes, a slew of supplements, and a huge bill to go along with it that insurance didn’t cover. Needless to say I couldn’t keep up with it all. Financially it wasn’t feasible and I wasn’t really seeing any changes, except for that my occasional migraines were now more frequent.
After naturopathy I ended up at a nutritionist which really started to change things for me. I started seeing improvements. Things were inching forward. It was a ton of work cooking and preparing all the foods, but it was progress. I ended up in her office because we had just found out our oldest munchie, at 12 months, had a number of food allergies, including multiple nut allergies. So there we were, him on the GAPS diet, and me on something similar to a paleo diet.
This is the road we traveled for the next few years. It was a confusing maze of information and a lot of work, but we were getting somewhere. For a time. My oldest was starting to decline in some ways, mainly in behavior. He was reacting poorly to more and more foods. He just wasn’t progressing on the diet anymore. I also was at a point where I wasn’t progressing any longer and in a lot of ways was also declining. I really started praying for wisdom about our situation at this point.
Soon I found myself pregnant with our second munchie and it was very difficult pregnancy. At this time we transitioned our oldest to just a grain free diet and thankfully he did very well. Slowly we started introducing more and more foods, mainly to take some pressure off me with cooking during the pregnancy.
I had gestational diabetes among other things while pregnant with our youngest and I was working with our nutritionist to get it under control. Seriously nothing was working. My sugar levels were more and more out of range as the pregnancy went on. The nutritionist ended up consulting with a colleague of her’s that recommended a type of homeopathic remedy called gemmotherapy. What do you know, within a few weeks my blood sugars were normal! Even with cheating every now and then on my diet they were still normal! I was amazed.
By this time homeopathy was becoming a little more familiar to me as I was starting to connect all the dots of my past experiences. Then came along our youngest munchie. As I said before my pregnancy was very hard with him. We pretty much lived at the doctors office during my entire pregnancy. When he was born we were so relieved all that was behind us and he was healthy.
Soon we started realizing he had some deeper issues going on. After birth he developed a horrible diaper rash. Red, raw, and bloody. Like his skin was being burned with acid. Nothing helped and it was spreading. The creases of skin in his groin were always bleeding. Soon after developing the diaper rash he also developed eczema all over his body. The same red raw, skin was all over his body now. Any folds of skin would be cracked, oozing, and bleeding. Nothing helped and no one had any answers.
Doctor after doctor had all the same suggestions. Naturopathy had nothing to offer us. The nutritionist had all the same suggestions as she had with myself and my oldest. The only problem was we were dealing with a baby. They don’t eat food. Yes I was breast feeding and yes I was avoiding every potential allergen under the sun. Nothing helped.
Then came the vomiting. It started when we began introducing foods. Two hours later he would vomit it all up. We finally narrowed it down somewhat to dairy and oatmeal. Even though it was occasionally other things. This was the best advice we had at the time, “figure out his triggers and avoid them”. To us that really didn’t seem like any kind of “answer”. Through all of this I just kept praying for an answer and some direction.
Around this same time two things happened. I had been reading a book on an alternative therapy our nutritionist had recommended for myself. In this book they briefly talked about homeopathy. Even though it was not a book about homeopathy it brought homeopathy to the forefront of my mind once again. The other thing was that I come down with a case of mastitis and was researching natural treatments for it. The next morning I received an email newsletter from a homeopath I just started following. In the newsletter was an article about what homeopathic remedies to take for mastitis! I followed her recommendations and within 24 hours it was gone!
That was it for me. I knew right then and there that God was showing me there was another way and homeopathy was it. It was like in that instant he connected all the dots of my past experiences with homeopathy. So I started looking and praying for direction. He completely blessed us by helping me finding the right homeopath. I scheduled an appointment for our youngest munchie and soon after I was also seeing her myself.
Today my youngest has no eczema, no diaper rash, no vomiting. My allergies are non existent, my asthma- gone, my migraines 90% better. Of course we are still on our road to healing and we have a ways to go, but our progress to this point has been like nothing I have ever experienced before. My husband and my oldest munchie have now also started treatment with homeopathy. I am expecting the same amazing story for them as well. I once again find myself AMAZED by this thing called homeopathy. If not for the gentle guiding from the Lord I probably would have never found it.
I am here to definitely sing the praises of homeopathy! That being said, I am NOT here to say all the other modalities we tried do not work. They just didn’t work for us. I believe most alternative modalities have their value and their place. Don’t get me wrong, as a family we whole heartedly adhere to a healthy diet, with whole, unadulterated food as much as possible. I believe that is essential to good health. But I believe we all have our own journey, and what brings healing for one may not for another.
I do want to champion the one overlooked, forgotten method of healing that VERY FEW people know anything about… Homeopathy. If you are searching as I was it may be the answer for you. You never know, it might just change your life.
Do you have a story of healing you would like to share? A forgotten method of healing you want to remind others about? I’d love to hear about it!
